Weekly News

A study was just released about the most unstable football fans in the league. Topping the charts was the Oakland Raiders. Patriots fans Were ranked third as most unstable and also were ranked high on the most disappointed after a win. Patriots fans did not place on the happiest after a win chart.

There are only two weeks of football left before the post season begins. In the most recent power rankings the Seattle Seahawks were again placed at number one. They were closely followed by their rivals, the San Francisco 49ers. The broncos have dropped down to third place. The fourth and fifth place teams go to The Carolina Panthers and the New Orleans Saints. Without Gronk the Patriots have dropped to seventh in the power rankings.

One of the Cowboy’s star players, Dez Bryant left last weeks game with time still on the clock. The Cowboys were losing against the Packers. Bryant stated that he felt emotional and did not want to continue playing.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers reportedly worked out his arm, throwing the ball around at practice. However, he has not been medically cleared to return to action. The Packers need to win their next two games to have a chance at making it to the playoffs.

Ravens quarterback, Joe Flacco, sprained his MCL on Monday night but the quarterback is still expected to play against the New England Patriots on Sunday.

I am ready for the playoffs! The next two weekends should be exciting to watch as the playoff teams begin to separate from the pack.

Fourtune Favorite: MVP Mary Barra

Mary Barra: First Female CEO of GM (General Motors)

Our MVP of the year is Mary Barra, soon-to-be first lady Chief Executive Officer of General Motors. With 33 years of automotive and industrial experience on her hands, Barra has managed to climb to the top– or, rather be promoted as CEO by a unanimous vote from the board.

photo credit: Ahren D via photopin cc

Though her gender may have made news this past month, her role continues to influence other young females to achieve their dreams, even if it may concern becoming the first woman CEO of a large scale automotive company. According to the Huffington Post, Barra was selected not because of her gender but specifically because of her talents. She continues to inspire the power women have in changing the world today.

As of now, Barra remains on the top 500 list, which was only known to have roughly 3.5% of the candidates appear on their top Fourtune 500 list for 2013. Barra’s position and title can also help teenagers to chase after dreams and work for success.

All I can say is, congratulations, Barra! Her story will be one of the millions of different ways to describe the future of occupational careers. By taking on such a heavy position, she will be needing to prepare for all the big inventions coming up this year.b

Harper’s story part 10

hullo dreamers,

I can see that ALL of you are biting your nails in anticipation of Smussers break… as am I.

I stayed close to Natalia as I walked down the cobblestone streets to an unknown destination on an expedition (outing) that Angelo was leading.

“Why did he come along?” Natalia hissed/whispered through gritted teeth as she jabbed a judging finger in Damian’s direction.

“Your brother invited him along, don’t ask me.” I bent down to answer her in equal volume.  Natalia quickened her pace to join Damian and Angelo who were walking ahead of us and gestured that she wanted to talk to Angelo. Damian caught her drift and smoothly lagged behind so that Natalia could talk to Angelo.

Damian approached me and I immediately straightened my back and ran my fingers through my hair, as if in a last ditch effort to make myself look acceptable. Over Damian’s approaching shoulder, I could see Natalia’s face turn livid and she hissed/ranted at Angelo in rapid Spanish.

“So, what’s a girl like you doing in a place like Chanal?” Damian asked causally. I thought how to best formulate the answer to make myself seem the most interesting.

“A girl like what?” I asked raising my eyebrows trying to look as beautiful as possible.

Damian looked at me as if I were a challenge.

“A girl like…” he gestured to me, my face. “I mean you look like a girl who is used to the first class treatment. Why would you uproot that to live here?”

I looked down and smiled, interlacing my fingers together. “The same reason as you I guess, I mean you’re here to help people, to you know… make a difference. I mean isn’t that what everybody wants to do?”

As I said this, the dazzling smile that was etched on his face surged ever so slightly. As if I was wrong.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, bending my face toward his. His proud, manly features rippled, and for a second, I could see the messed up child beneath. A child begging for a way out from this maze of fame and public influence.

“You’re so…pure, I mean, you’re so sure about what you want to do. And… it’s really great… Just never change, okay Harper.” He put his hand on my shoulder and I felt a tremor shake through me, I hoped that he wouldn’t notice how nervous I was to even be talking to him. His firm hand which was resting on my shoulder slid ever so slowly to my forearm then my hand, I felt pins and needles in the trialing his touch. My skin froze over as the blood boiled underneath. His face was firm as his eyes resembled those of a scared child. His fingers intertwined with mine.

It took me a while to realize that I WAS HOLDING HANDS WITH THE DAMIAN DELUCA!

We walked like that for a few more blocks as the children were walking, Angelo walking like he owned the world, a young gleeful smile cavorting on his face. On the other hand was Natalia, who for some unknown reason was walking blank-faced, stiffly at Angelo’s side. As Angelo’s expedition came to an end, we found ourselves at the center of Chanal. There was a magnificent marble water fountain in the center of the square and lights hung around each building for no apparent reason.

Angelo’s face lit up brighter than the strung lights, my heart was doing jumping jacks and the wings of thousands of butterflies were beating against the walls of my chest. Damian saw my expression and smiled, his grip on my hand tightened and yet all the same became even more gentle. I tried to keep from giggling and squealing like a little girl. Natalia looked at us with a look of utter discomfort. I made a curious face but she brushed me off.

Angelo led us through the square and I saw the shabby, but equally magnificent amusement park which was his real motives. Natalia continued to look uncomfortable. Angelo grabbed Damian by the hand and whisked him away to get tickets, while I was left alone with Natalia. It seemed that as Damian left, so did her feelings of discomfort. What was it about Damian that made Natalia so uneasy? What did she discover in the short five minutes before we left her home?

To be continued…

Keep dreaming

Twitter Helping Issaquah High School

Recently, Twitter has exploded with multiple Issaquah accounts. They range from sports to spirit weeks. Twitter has become a focal point at Issaquah for spreading news that people need to know.

Here are a couple of the accounts related to Issaquah High School:

-IssyWinterfest: This account was made to spread news about the spirit week we are having right now and to recognize some of the best dressed students of Issaquah. This is actually a pretty brilliant idea. In the world of technology, it is a very smart idea for schools to embrace social media as a way to communicate news with students. I also like the idea of sharing some of the most spirited kids of the day because it actually does motivate them to have the most creative outfits.

-ISSYSUPERFANS: ISSYSUPERFANS is the Twitter page for everything you need to know to support Issaquah’s athletics and sometimes even other activities. It is constantly updating followers with the upcoming sporting events to follow. It gives information on when games are, if there is a theme for the fans, and even tells people if there are tailgates before games. This account also helps spread information coming from other accounts. This week it has been tweeting lots about the spirit days and posted multiple pictures of acoustic night. Make sure to follow ISSYSUPERFANS so you never forget what is going on at Issaquah.

-IssaquahHigh: This a recently made account (last Friday) run by some of the administrators at Issaquah. Not only does it talk about some sporting events, it also sheds light on some of the cooler academic news at Issaquah. For example, the account tweeted about former IHS graduate and current astronomer Dr. Steven Finkelstein visiting the school today to talk about why astronomy is important. Without this account, no one outside of the school would see this exciting opportunity.

Game Review

Over the last week or so I sat down and decided to play a game called Paranautical Activity. The small indie title was $3.09 on steam and was well worth the money. The game doesn’t have a story, but the objectives are obvious; clear the rooms kill the ridiculous bosses and get power ups. The game play as a rougelike shooter, you get one life to beat all the bosses (I have not accomplished it yet) and all the rooms are randomly generated for a different play through each time.

When you play you get several options of classes. Gilead is a Laser beam minigun coupled with a heat seeking blow fish gun. That’s right a heat seeking gun that shoots out blow fish. I’m not completely sure why, but there’s a class called David Bowe and he gets a crossbow. Dy-no-mite comes equipped with grenade launcher along with a metric ton of explosives ohh and a Katana. The Tank gets a shotgun and has the bonus of taking ridiculous amounts of health. Finally Gorton (don’t understand the names) gets a sickle and a laser beam. Each class forces you to play certain way up until you get the powerups and then all the classes start to play in the same fashion. Not really a bad thing it was awesome to be able to jump into the air like I was a Kangaroo hopped up on cocaine and I found it quite enjoyable.

The bosses in this game are the centerpiece they change each level and so far I haven’t been able to get past level 4. One boss is a giant skull that shoots green orbs and upchucks swarms of spiders to kill you. Another is a giant spider on it that charges at you (these guys had a thing for spiders). There is also a Giant Whale, a octopus that grows to the size of the room your in, Poseidon, and Medusa.

Overall I found this game very enjoyable and for three dollars it was well worth it.

Green Arrow

A.K.A Oliver Queen

Oliver Queen is a billionaire playboy that has no sense of responsibility. As a young boy he idolized Robin Hood and was a natural archer. He often practiced shooting and experienced a traumatizing event when he killed his first animal. This ended up getting his parents killed when he couldn’t take the shot on a lion that killed them. He then was raised by his uncle and became a drunken playboy with no sense of responsibility or direction in life. This all changed when he fell off his boat and stayed afloat due to a bow from the Robin Hood movie. He was stranded on Starfish Island and used his bow to survive and gained mastery over the bow.

This experience showed his self reliance and he also learned to become a man. His next test was when he had to take down drug smugglers led by international crime boss China White. He used his new skills to take down the heroine operation and delivered them to authorities. He then returned home now knowing that is was his destiny to protect Star City. He built his own secret base the Arrow Cave and had a Arrow Car taking after Batman and makes trick arrows to fight crime. He also got a sidekick known as Speedy also known as Roy Harper who is his adopted son.

Green Arrow then joins the Justice league along with Black Canary also know as Laurel Lance. She is also Oliver’s girlfriend and he moves to Seattle with her and they start a flower shop known as Sherwood Florist. They break up for awhile, but eventually get back together and eventually get married.

At a certain point Oliver has to kill his best friend Hal Jordan also known as Green Lantern. He is eventually brought back to life though. When Green Arrow is killed his son Connor Hawke takes his place until he is resurrected by Green Lantern when he has god like powers. He then save a young girl known as Mia Dearden who becomes the new Speedy. Green Arrow also becomes the city mayor for some time and helps his Black Canary get her adopted Sin into the country from Vietnam. He has to fight the Red Hood who is actually Jason Todd an ex Robin. He teams up with Batman at this point and beats the hood up, but he escapes and takes Speedy hostage.

The Green Arrow gets married to Black Canary after he saves her daughter Sin by faking her death. At the wedding many of the superhero community were there and were attacked by super villains who they defeated. Green Arrow kills the super villain Prometheus in cold blood after her destroys most of Star City and rips off Roy Harper’s right arm. He almosts kills Black Canary, Connor Hawke, and Speedy while under the control of Nekron who has zombified most superheroes. He is eventually let go when he uses the last of his will power to miss a kill shot and hit a nitrogen tank freezing the Black Lantern and giving the Green Lantern the chance to revive all the superheroes and defeats Nekron.

Eventually Green Lantern and Flash find Prometheus’s body and Black Canary tires to reason with him, but he pushes her away. Connor Hawke also gets mad at him for how crappy of a parent he is and says he may never forgive him. Speedy is the only person on Green Arrows side and she captures Electrocutioner to kill him. Green Arrow then starts to feel guilty and doesn’t want Speedy to have to do something like that so he turns himself in. This also leads to Black Canary leaving him and him going to jail. He escapes eventually and lives in the forest doing all he can for Star City while under the radar. He now is a modern day Robin Hood and robs the rich to give to the poor.

His powers include:
Superb archer
Peak human physical condition
Highly-trained martial artist, athlete and swordsman
Possesses a recurve bow with a variety of trick arrows

He often teams up with:
Red Arrow
Green Lantern
Black Canary

2013 Major moments

Here, we look back on an eventful 2013 in the four majors of the year: the Masters, U.S. Open, the British Open, and the PGA Championship.

The Masters: winner- Adam Scott. This was, in my opinion, the best and most entertaining major of the year. There was the 14-year-old, and the runner-up Angel Cabrera, who was 43 years old. Cabrera lost in the playoff to Adam Scott, and it was the biggest win so far in his career. Perhaps the most talked-about part of the tournament was Tiger’s drop after hitting in the water, and even though people can go on what-iffing forever, in the end it was Adam Scott claiming victory.

The U.S. Open: winner- Justin Rose. Phil Mickelson came oh so close yet again in the U.S. Open as Merion Golf Course served up a much harder test than many experts thought it would due to its shortness. In the end, Justin Rose came from behind and parred the brutal 18th hole for the win, and his first career major.

The British Open: winner- Phil Mickelson. Lefty came back from a brutal U.S. Open to win twice across the pond, including the British Open. He birdied the final two holes for the win, and his final round score of 66 was perhaps the best round of the year in golf. Lee Westwood gave away another major and rising Henrik Stenson finished second, the only player other than Mickelson at par or better.

The PGA Championship: winner- Jason Dufner. After losing in a playoff to Keegan Bradley a few years ago in this tournament, Dufner pulled through for the win in the final round, making him the third first-time-winner of a major this year.

Quit Being Such A Choir Boy (Girl)!

I know that it might be a little offensive to some readers but I seriosly need people to stop being such choir people! I think that it’s okay if you want to do choir; in fact I think it’s excellent!

It’s when you start making differences between yourselves that really ticks me off.

A friend of mine in choir handed me a pamphlet for their upcoming concert (it happened yesterday) and I was shocked to see five different groups preforming. Five! That’s a lot! So I asked my friend if perhaps some bands or acapella (how do you spell that?) groups that didn’t have members of the school choir in them were performing but she told me that all of the groups were high school students.

I was in band for, like, six years so I can understand separating the good singers from the bad (and the ugly… That’s a movie reference, I’m not trying to insult anyone) but making so many differentiations is not good.

Regardless, even if there were five groups performing the music was still good and filled with holiday cheer. I highly suggest going to see their other concert this spring. And if you can’t get enough of these choir people then you can always check out our school plays. They are literally infested with choir kids.

Pork Barrel Spending and its Debate

Pork barrel is the fraud of government spending for local projects made primarily to bring money to a representative’s district. In election campaigns, the term is used in derogatory form to attack opponents. Political scientists, however, use it as a technical term regarding legislative control of local fraud activity. However, they do not always constitute a negative outcome, depending on the project. Here is an example:

Former Massachusetts US Representative Tip O’Neill promoted the Big Dig or the Central Artery/Tunnel Project (CA/T).  The project focused on repositioning 3.5 miles of an already placed interstate highway system for the benefit of Boston and New England Traffic. Pork barrel spending is a legislative body’s spending on a project that improves the Representative’s district. Big Dig was based primarily in Representative O’Neill’s district, which constitutes it as pork barrel spending. Also it was not requested by the President and it greatly exceeded the previous year’s funding as it ended up being $14.6 billion dollars of taxpayer money. This proposal was important to the elected representative who proposed it because in the long run it was one of Boston’s most useful projects as it highly improved its mobility which stopped the annual estimated $500 million of traffic expenses, and created over 45 plazas and parks.  Although it was extremely expensive and a very inconvenient project physically, in the long run it was very beneficial which decreases the Representative’s fault in porkiness.

3-D Printed Brains

This is not the first time I have written about 3-D printing, but it is such a fascinating topic, and there is so much continual research and experimentation done in this field. Most notably, scientists have been able to print kidneys, hearts, and bones, but the brain is a newer body part that is worked on.

Researchers are heavily pursuing the development of 3-D brains because it is a very valuable tool for neurosurgeons. Since it is oftentimes difficult for beginning neurosurgeons to gain operation experiences, 3-D brains will provide them with hands-on opportunities to conduct surgery on the brain. While observing surgeons and practicing on cadavers and simulators provide some experience and exposure to the procedure, this is nothing in comparison to the actual procedure. These 3-D models effectively serve their purpose because they emulate real life membrane, tissue, and human bones, and the models can be modified to have tumors and illnesses. The models can also be used repeatedly, which is important because perfecting the methods for brain surgery is crucial. These models are also better than cadavers because they can be tailored for different purposes.

Due to the continual development of these models, institutions are beginning to reconsider how they prepare their students for operations. It is especially important that students are able to make mistakes by operating on the models while learning from a realistic simulator. The new technology also increases the standards in training and the level of competence needed. All of these factors improve both the training of students and the future health of patients.

Overall, 3-D bioprinting is a revolutionary aspect of bioengineering, and it will only continue to improve human health in a multitude of ways.

A Gluten Free Holiday

Holiday-themed recipes are both fun and delicious. This time of year, so many great things are being flavored with peppermint, chocolate, and gingerbread. However, most of these things unfortunately contain gluten. While this may be hard out of the house and at parties, remember one can make their own adjustments and create their own gluten free holiday! Here, I found a really interesting recipe for gingerbread pancakes, gluten free! This will be great to try out one morning during break, and be the perfect way to wake up during  Christmastime. This comes from the gluten free blog “Mom, What’s For Dinner?” I just found it, and it looks like it contains some great ideas on new recipes and twists on dishes, all sans gluten.

Gluten-Free Gingerbread Pancakes

2 tsp fresh ginger minced
1 cup better batter gluten-free flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1 pinch ground cloves
dash of salt
1 cup milk
4 eggs, separated
1/2 cup molasses

In a large bowl, combine dry ingredients (flour, spices, salt) and the ginger.
Separate the eggs, place egg whites in your electric mixer bowl, the yolks in a small bowl. Beat the egg whites until foamy and fairly stiff.

In the egg yolk bowl, stir in the milk and molasses

Add the yolk mixture to the dry mixture. Finally fold in the egg whites.
Add butter to the griddle, drop on spoonfuls of the batter. Its ready to flip when you see bubbles in the middle of the pancake and its golden on the bottom, about 3-5 minutes on each side.
She also adds that she serves hers with vanilla syrup, which is made by “heating butter, sweetened condensed milk and vanilla in a pan. Heat until the right consistency.”
Have fun trying out this easy, themed recipe for a twist on classic pancakes!

South Korean Basic Culture

Hello friends!

Now that you are a little familiar with some of the interesting traditions of South Korea, it is finally time to dive in and find out more about the roots of the general culture and traditions itself.

South Korean Family:

In South Korea, the family is the most important aspect of everyday life. In the family, the father is the head of the household and is expected to provide shelter, clothing, food, and other necessities to the family. Not only this, they also approve the marriages of other family members. The oldest son also has responsibilities. They are expected to first respect and help his parents, then to his brothers from oldest to younger, then to his sons, then his wife, and finally to his daughters. The actions of family members greatly affect the rest of their family. In fact, there is a lot of emphasis that is put on ancestors and family members. Ancestors are traced back based on the father. Children are taught to respect their parents, and that their debt that they owe to their parents and ancestors is never ending. Because of this, many people worship their ancestors, and there are special days where peoples’ ancestors are celebrated.

  • When greeting someone, it is custom to bow first and then shake hands
  • The oldest person will initiate the handshake
  • When saying goodbye, it is also expected that you bow to others at whatever gathering you attended
  • The number four is unlucky, so when bringing a host or hostess gift, make sure it is not in fours–giving 7 of an item though is considered lucky!

health benefits of chia seeds

Chia seeds are not something many people know about but they are extremely beneficial to your health. They are so small people use a lot of the in bulk for topping on overnight oats or on top of smoothies. They sound like sand when you buy them in the bag and they are usually very small and black looking. But lets get to the benefits:
