This is my last blog post for a while, but I will most likely be continuing this soccer blog in September when the 2016-2017 season starts.
Usually summer is a slow time for soccer. Besides the MLS in the United States, there is not much for soccer fans to watch. However, this summer is filled with quality international soccer.
The Copa America, which is a tournament that usually only includes South American teams, is unique this year because it includes North American teams and is being hosted by the United States. The tournament is already a week in and there has been some really great soccer. The United States lost their first match against a quality Colombia side, but ended up winning their group because Colombia lost to Costa Rica. Teams that look like contenders are Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and the United States. Brazil is out of the tournament because they lost their final group stage match to Peru 1-0 on a controversial goal that looked like a handball.
The European Championship started a few days ago and favorites Germany, Spain, and France all won their first games. The group stage is always a little dry, but once the knockout stages begin, it gets very exciting.
The Summer Olympics, which starts on August 5th, will feature some more quality soccer. Brazil and Barcelona star Neymar will be playing in the Olympics and there should be some good matches.
This summer is jam packed with really exciting international soccer and international soccer is always fun to watch.
